From a meager beginning in October of 1872, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, popularly known as Virginia Tech, has evolved into a comprehensive university of national and international prominence. As Virginia's largest university with 25,600 students and one of the top 50 research institutions in the nation, it is an institution that firmly embraces a history of putting knowledge to work. That tradition is rooted in our motto, Ut Prosim: "That I May Serve," and our land-grant missions of instruction, research, and solving the problems of society through public service and outreach activities.

Housing more than 8,900 students in 44 residence halls, Virginia Tech ranks as the 14th largest on-campus housing system in the nation. We strive to create and maintain the kind of environment in which everyone lives and learns effectively, so that every student's residence hall living experience will complement his or her academic experience. Living on campus is convenient and economical, but we hope that students make the most of their time on campus by taking advantage of the numerous programs and services offered by Student Programs' Housing and Dining Services.
